Now overshadowed by far taller and much more recent buildings, the Washington Block is a particularly handsome example of the kind of multi-story structures that arose in the business district in the decade following the fire.  It was designed by Frederick & Edward Baumann and constructed in 1874.  While the Washington Block survived, many others like it gave way to the skyscraper revolution that began in the 1880s.
